I feel like there is just no beating the Triangle area when it comes to running routes, and the following photo tour is my absolute favorite in this area. It has a little of everything: road, trail, bridle path, greenway, lakes, creeks, hills, and plenty of water and bathrooms stops along the way. A runner cannot ask for a better route!
The route begins with a run up and down the hills of Dynasty Drive in Cary, NC. You turn out onto Harrison Ave and run a pretty solid, gently climbing hill past the war memorial and into Umstead Park.
The technical trail begins with a drop into the ravine and then continues alongside the creek until ascending again; you come out onto the bridle path: a wide, packed gravel trail that runs through Umstead Park.
If you are a Strava lover, there are quite a few segments you will cross as you head towards the Black Creek Greenway. This section of the route also offers a water stop about 2.5 miles before the greenway entrance.
From Umstead, you turn right onto the greenway and run past Crabtree Lake, which offers yet more amazing views (and a bit of relief from the Umstead hills!).
Towards the end of the route, there is yet another water stop and a dock out onto the lake, the perfect spot for one final photograph and a sprint to the finish.
